Music Night

My brother and I went to see Star Trek – The Music, presented by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall tonight. We had gotten nice, mid-range tickets for 8th-row seats on the main floor to the left side. These were pretty decent seats, with my only regret being unable to see the entire orchestra – we could only see the front few rows of violins (including the first violinist), Erich Kunzel (the conductor), and the cellos and bass on the other side, but we couldn’t see the wind instruments from our angle. Still, we had an awesome time, taking in familiar, image-inspiring tunes while listening to hosts Robert Picardo and John de Lancie guide us through the history of the music of Star Trek (and all the while cracking mostly-corny jokes). We were also amused by the handful of people who came as Klingons and Starfleet officers (which was to be expected, given that there is no dress code), and somewhat annoyed by the couple sitting next to us who arrived late, smelled of cigarette smoke, and made funny gurgling sounds while breathing (probably also due to cigarette smoke). Fortunately, the acoustics of the auditorium brought the sounds over very well and all but immersed us into that other world.
