My name is Jasper. I have previously gone by the handles Szylar, Gune, Zero and Bitshift(er). I am a proud graduate of Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and now I do software development in the medical imaging industry at ClearCanvas Inc.

At Waterloo, I was involved with Frosh Week in 2004, and was heavily involved in the delegate registration and conference operations of the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference in 2005 and 2006.

Prior to university I was a student attending Thornhill Secondary School in Thornhill, Ontario. I was involved with Prefect League at school, as well as Mentors, a group of senior students dedicated to helping grade nines adjust to high school life. I was a member of the SchoolNet Youth Advisory Board, a panel of 19 students from across Canada selected by Industry Canada to advise the government on the use of and deployment of technology to children and students across the nation.

I play the violin, and reached an RCM 10 level before university. My studies now take precedence, though I still play from time to time.

I am an avid Star Trek fan, and possess hordes of meaningless trivia about starship classes and alien races. My favourite series are Enterprise, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Yes, I have also seen all the movies. It was a great advantage when writing high school English exams because there is always least an episode that can be related for any theme!

Besides Star Trek, I also enjoy watching science fiction and war movies, as well as reading historical fiction, science fiction, mystery and action novels. Some of my favourite movies include Star Trek (2009), X-Men, Blade Runner, Hunt for Red October, and the classic 007 movies, including Moonraker, The Man With the Golden Gun and Goldfinger. My favourite written works include Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, Factoring Humanity by Robert Sawyer and The Guns of Navarone by Alistair Maclean.

I enjoy working and playing on my computer. I used to play MUDs and MOOs such as AnsibleMOO and Astaria (recently, these have all been going to that big place in the sky for old games :-/). When I have time these days, I am divided between Battlefield 2, Spore, and World of Warcraft.
